Maria Montessori, Civil Rights Movement and The No Child...
I am going to write about three major events that has affected the course of U.S. education forever. I will also touch on a very important and influential woman who wanted to help others (notably children) first and foremost. America and education worldwide should have tremendous gratitude towards each of these topics I will be discussing. Personally, as I researched each one, I feel more motivated and driven to impact my own community and raise awareness on how important education is. The influential woman I mentioned above is Maria Montessori. Maria Montessori was extremely well-rounded with her talents. Today, she is well known for the Montessori Method, which is used in public and private schools throughout the world. She would go on to travel the world to share her unique approach to education, which garnered a fair share of attention. I believe that without her undivided passion and desire to make a difference, not only would special education suffer but education as a whole would not be what it is today. A major event for both education and personal rights occurred in 1964. The civil rights act of 1964 was passed and headed to make a positive change towards equality. This act not only prohibits discrimination on the basis of race and color but also religion, sex or national origin. This act allowed people of color to be taught in better schools and in a classroom filled with diversity. The civil rights laws continue to represent a nation wide commitment to end discrimination in education. These laws have been put into place in order to help deliver the promise that every individual has the right to develop his or her talents to the fullest. The civil rights laws have helped bring forth many amazing changes in American education but perhaps more importantly improved the educational opportunities of every student regardless of gender, color, race or religion. One of the changes that have been observed is the dropout and graduation rates. The Cracks in Glassââ¬â¢s Career Free Essays
Stephen Glass was 24 years old when the incident happened. Back then, he was working for The New Republic (TNR) which is reputed to be one of the most influential magazines in America. According to him, the work load was much, the pressure tremendous and they are underpaid. The question here is why did the glass shatter? More specifically what made Stephen Glass Break? Long before the actual crack, ââ¬Å"chippingsâ⬠from Glass can be noticed. These ââ¬Å"chippingsâ⬠as I have called them are represented by the words he uttered like ââ¬Å"are you mad at me?â⬠and ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t hate meâ⬠. These words are said by Stephen whenever he was asked by Michael Kelly or Chuck, the editors of TNR to verify a fact from his story. Curiosity will make us ask why he says these things. The answer to this question is that he fears loosing his friends and job. As is depicted in the movie; Stephen is yearning for acceptance which can be deducted as the primary source of ââ¬Å"rewardâ⬠he gets from his co-workers. The people in The New Republic find him funny and sweet. They also appreciate the things he says about them and the way he treats them. Stephen Glass doesnââ¬â¢t want to lose them. Deep inside him is the gnawing fear that his fictitious places, people and events be discovered. If the inevitable occurs; his job and friends will all disappear. The Glass will lose everything. This is his deepest fear. The chipping continues. Whenever Stephen wrote/created a story, he would present it to the staff in full color to make each one enjoy the account. And just when everybody is having such a good time, he starts referring to the piece as ââ¬Å"sillyâ⬠, ââ¬Å"stupidâ⬠or ââ¬Å"not worth writingâ⬠. All the time, Stephen knows his stories are incredible. People even attest to it: A teacher commented that he should write a boring piece once in a while. In these instances, his yearning for acceptance comes out. He wants to ensure that everybody likes his work. Another possible reason is Stephensââ¬â¢ fear of discovery. Almost all his pieces are incredible but he does not know how incredible it is such that people wonââ¬â¢t accept it. Most of his stories, if read with a clear mind, will most certainly be doubted. But the idea alone that he works for a big time magazine company makes it credible. The topics which he writes about also go a long way in making his pieces credible. The topics he chooses can be said to be ââ¬Å"secretsâ⬠and may seem to be the very type of information to be kept secret from the general public. When most people start their jobs, they always dream of making it big or garnering success. Weââ¬â¢ll never know whether Stephen once dreamt of making it big in the world of journalism. But we do know that he did. We also know that he lost it: because the cracks appeared. The New York University journalism hand book for students created a list of laws and ethics in order to guide their students in journalism. Stephen Glass violated three from their list. At beginning of the movie, glass himself said ââ¬Å"do not lie about who you areâ⬠. In order to write one of his pieces, which turned up to be partially fabricated, Stephen ââ¬Ëmasqueradedââ¬â¢ himself as a member and did not identify himself as a journalist. The second violation is on ââ¬Ëquotingââ¬â¢ which he did by making up quotes which was not said. It should be pointed out that according to the NYU hand book, a quote must be a word for word account of what the interviewee said. The third and greatest violation is on ââ¬Ëfabricationââ¬â¢. According to the movie 27 out of 41pieces he wrote was either partially of wholly fabricated. Stephen Glass made some mistakes. Major ones. However, before we throw stones at him, it must be noted he was still in his early 20ââ¬â¢s when the story happened. Just a slip and somehow the work load and pressure got into him. Glass lied. Someone saw through his veils of fiction and fact, investigated and found out he twisted the truth. The Glass started breaking; small cracks at first. But when it started, Caitlin a co-worker saved him or at least tried to. Chuck the new editor of TNR was bombarding Stephen with questions on facts about a piece called ââ¬Å"Hack Heavenâ⬠. Caitlin said that Stephen may have made his mistakes due to panic and pressure. While watching the movie, the viewer cannot feel but get angry for Stephen even more because not like Caitlin, I know better. Glass may be just a kid but he can lie his way through jurymen without blinking. He admits it as he said during the movie that he knows what moves a person. The Glass breaks. This time long cracks appeared. Chuck found out that Stephen may have lied on more than one occasion. He comes rushing to Stephen with evident fury in his eyes and tells him he is fired. Stephen never liked Chuck. He may have hated Chuck because the guy replaced Michael Kelly, the editor Glass admires because Kelly fights for his staff. This is rather unfair as Chuck also fights for his staff. When the cracks started appearing, the editor was overwhelmed by the idea of the piece being partly fictional. He even tried to protect Stephen from the journalist who found out but the Glass cracked totally and Chuck was the first to see the cracks. One by one he read trough Glassââ¬â¢ articles and realized such an incident may have happened before. Chuck was furious; his fury was fuelled by the discovery of being played as a fool, of reading lines after lines of fiction he will publish as facts, of defending a liar and of hearing and believing Stephenââ¬â¢s lies whenever confronted with the truth. So didnââ¬â¢t he drive Glass to the airport? He is tired of hearing Stephenââ¬â¢s side of the case which always ends up as a lie. We can see instances from a class where Stephen made a talk as a journalist throughout the movie and use this to explain how far his lies got a hold on him. This also shows how much it took away from him what he once discovered. And the Glass shatters. ââ¬Å"You have to know who youââ¬â¢re writing for, and you have to know what youââ¬â¢re good at. I record what people do. I find out what moves them, what scares them. and I write that down. That way theyââ¬â¢re the ones telling the story.â⬠Everyone lies. But a journalist must not. He cannot. Recently, there has been a new billboard by Sisley on the streets of Zagreb. The picture is representing a young women on the floor with lots of cucumbers around her and one in her mouth. They just keep shocking, but why? Probably because controversial marketing is known to have an impact on drawing attention to the brand. When searching about the reasons why Benetton is doing such commercials, I found out that they want to raise the awareness about global problems and concerns among their global customers. They have officially divided their advertising campaigns in three separate phases and the first one started in 1986, when Benetton began cooperation with Oliviero Toscani. The phases where named: cycle of difference, cycle of reality and cycle of free speech and the right to express it. Each released campaign, such as the one against capital punishment, resulted in widespread protest against the company, from the customers as well as governments. Usually, it ended up with lots of free publicity and an increase in sales, but after the ââ¬Ëdeath rowââ¬â¢ campaign, they decided to stop controversial advertising. Few weeks ago, I have received an e-mail offering a student internship in Coca Cola HBC in the selling department. It seemed very interesting from my point of view and thatââ¬â¢s why I decided to sign up for doing the internship. I had been invited for an interview and the week after I have started my internship in Coca Cola. It lasted for a week only. First day of my internship, we all gathered together and were explained what are we going to do in the next five days. Firstly, I was disappointed, but now, after I have finished those tough five days, I am really glad because of that experience. Market impact teams are teams of two or three people, one student and two Coca Cola employees usually, who are going around coffee bars and shops and are trying to have an impact on buying behavior by ordering shelves, cleaning fridges, putting promo material all over the place, thus creating a brand awareness. MIT is organized two times a year, before Christmas and before Easter. In Coca Cola, they are very proud of this actions, but I have always been asking myself, does it really increase sales? The answer was given to me by a young manager, who I was working with. He told me that in the short run and in general, it does not increase sales, but it creates a brand awareness which is really important for every product and company. It wasnââ¬â¢t an answer that satisfied me. I went further by asking: ââ¬Å"But Coca Cola is a well known brand, actually, probably the best known brand in the world. Going into a perfumery and having a glance at all of the beautiful and colorful perfumes, makes me buy them all. After approaching the most beautiful and attractive one, with the amazing desire of having it, you smell it and amazingly, it smells really bad. What are you doing? If you have money, probably you end up buying it anyways. If you donââ¬â¢t, you wouldnââ¬â¢t probably buy the better smelling one either. This question arises in my head every time I see millions of amazingly looking small packages of perfumes. The other fact that I have realized is that perfumes for male population are not even comparable to female ones. Is the package of the perfume what really drives our purchase behavior when buying perfumes? Some researches show that associating a beautiful design and color of a perfume with the smell makes the perfume more attractive, which increases the purchase. But what if a perfume is a great looking, with average smell and high price? That makes him even more attractive. It is well know that expensive perfumes are luxury goods. Higher price will make them more desirable because when seeing a beautiful package and a high price, we are creating an image of it before even smelling it. Not only for perfumes, this phenomenon happens with other luxury things as well. Human nature is just not strong enough to resist a beautiful package. I am a huge animal lover and for me, animal killing is almost as cruel as human. The Procter and Gambleââ¬â¢s testing on animals was also a topic of my speech on the second year of college and that is when I did a little research on this topic. Not only that Procter and Gamble is one of the most famous brands in the world, but it is also one of the richest companies. Itââ¬â¢s cruel method of testing can be easily replaced by an alternative. Despite this fact, PG refuses to stop testing on animals, even though more reliable and humane alternatives do exist. By testing on animals, not only that they are creating a bad brand image and are representing a companyââ¬â¢s unethical behavior, but they are also losing a lots of customers each day. Still, it is not important for them. Their earnings are probably still so high, that they donââ¬â¢t have to take care about those 100 people giving up from their brand each day. I am one of them and I can tell for myself that I would never buy from Procter and Gamble again, neither from the other brands testing on animals. Despite their global popularity, the brand image they are creating is not as good as it could be if they spent the huge amount of money they have on behaving more ethically and switching to a less cruel ways of testing their products. Topic 7: Design Ugly, comfortable and expansive-perfect combination I have tried hard to resist buying UGG boots this and last winter, and fortunately, I have succeeded. Different story is with my Crocs slippers. In fact, I have 3 pairs and I just love them. Those two brands I choose because they are well known for being ugly and expensive, but extraordinarily comfortable. I have never tried UGG boots myself but from other peopleââ¬â¢s stories they seem extremely warm and cosy. Since I have been seeing them every day, they are not even so ugly for me anymore. Crocs slippers neither. From my own experience, I can say that Crocs slippers are so comfortable that when you wear them once, you just donââ¬â¢t want to take them off. They are perfect choice in lots of situations and places, such as home, beach or long way walking. From these two examples, we can see that recently, people changed their points of view a bit. Of course, people still take care about how they look but sometimes, the way they feel in their clothes and shoes leaves a stronger impression than the clothes itself. UGG Australia and Crocs are two perfect examples for this statement and after writing this diary I will probably give up from my decision to never wear UGG boots and go buy a pair for myself. Topic 8: Business ethics Lying about price reductions Last winter, I was in shopping for a jacket. While walking along Ilica, I entered a Miss Sixty store to see if they have something interesting for me. I came across a really nice, but for me, very expensive jacket. On the price tag, it said that it costed 3000 kunas but it is 50% off, so it costs ââ¬Ëonlyââ¬â¢ 1500 kunas. The jacket was from the winter before and that is why the price was reduced. I never got over that jacket and thatââ¬â¢s why I still remember the story. This year I was walking along Ilica again and went in the Miss Sixty store to see the new interior of the store. The very same jacket from the last winter, that was actually from the winter before, was still on the hanger. The thing that surprised me the most was the price on the price tag. It said that the jacket costed 4500 kunas in the beginning, but the price was reduced to 3700 kunas firstly and now, it is even more reduced, and costs ââ¬Ëonlyââ¬â¢ 3000 kunas. That really shocked me. After telling this story to other people, I heard very similar experiences but with other stores and brands. It usually happens that, if a product is not sold on the discount the year that it has been produced, the price next year appears to be the same, even though they say it is on sale. From my own experience and point of view, words like ââ¬Ësaleââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëdiscountsââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëprice reductionââ¬â¢ are very influential on human brain and thus, buying behavior. Sometimes you just canââ¬â¢t let other people buy that great shirt or a jacket that is on sale and you end up buying it, even though you might not need it or its price is still high. Experts dealing with selling products and services are very aware of the basic facts in buying behavior and human nature. They know that only a word ââ¬Ësaleââ¬â¢ will increase sales even if there is no sale at all. What bothers me is that I am probably falling for that trick almost every day but I do not realize it. As well as experts know how to sell, we should know what we want to buy and we should never follow the words, because sometimes they are just misleading. Thatââ¬â¢s is how I came across the article about very famous Hermes Birkin bags. Everyone knows how expensive and popular they are but I would never expect that people would wait up to 6 months to only get on a waiting list. One of their most loyal customers is famous Victoria Beckham, who has a huge collection of their bags, worth about 1. 5 million pounds. This shows a great brand loyalty they have, among the celebrities but the rich part of population also. Birkin bag is a luxury, rather then a need and from that point of view we can say that each person who buys it is loyal to the brand. If it wasnââ¬â¢t for loyalty and the status symbol, no one would ever buy a million pounds worth handbag. I have noticed that most logos are in the red color. I didnââ¬â¢t know if it was for a reason and thatââ¬â¢s why I checked it on the internet as soon as I came home. There really is an amazing relation between the two and thatââ¬â¢s why firms pay a lot of attention when designing a logo or making a commercial. It is said that red color is a symbol of aggression and passion and it is used to motivate an individual to take action or convey a warning. It is also believed that is stimulates appetite. Oppositely to aggressive red color, green color is way more relaxed, symbolising growth and wealth. It is often used in commercials for natural products. It calms the mind and creates a feeling of happiness. Black color, an example of a neutral color, is well know symbol for elegance, power and sadness, as well. It is said that black color shouldnââ¬â¢t be used a lot when advertising. It can cause sadness and depression. On the contrary, white color symbolises cleanliness, purity and spirituality. It is used a lot in advertising but mostly as a background color, because it makes other colors seem more vivid and bold. All of these examples show that my question about the relation between colors and logos wasnââ¬â¢t foolish at all. When seeing advertisements and commercials, but buying also, people do not consider a color as something that influences their buying behavior, but researchers and marketing specialists are more than aware of this great marketing weapon. - IN LEGAL WAR [pic] [pic] [pic] [pic] [pic] [pic] [pic] I have never been a big fan of television, in fact, I have been avoiding watching TV and trying to do something else instead, since I have started high school. When I was 15 I went to United States for a year as an exchange student. Living there, surrounded with lots of overweight people, junk food and starting to have weight problems myself, I h ave realized what a damaging effect on human health a food can cause. Since my host mother was a nurse, she was taking a lot of care about mine and my host sisters healthy diet. I have never heard about the topic before, becuase the problem is not so spread in our country, but my mom was always talking about negative effects of television food advertising on eating behavior. If it wasnt for her, I would probably never realize the shocking effects of TV on the eating behavior. All of us know how unhealthy is to eat in front of the TV. It is because our brain isnt getting signals fast enough and we dont stop eating as we would stop if we were concentrated only on eating. Effect which is related to this one is the effect of food advertising on TV and our eating and purchasing behavior. Nowadays, obesity is the fastest growing cause of disease and death in America, caused by reductions in physical activity and overconsumption of unhealty food. A lot of people consider that unhealthy messages communicated to children through food advertising is a leading cause of unhealthy consumption. It is also confirmed that food advertising leads to greater preferences and purcahse of the products advertised. What we can conclude from these facts is that we should try to avoid eating in front of TV or eat whatever is advertised on TV at that moment. How Hurricanes Form in the Sahara Desert In the United States, the eastern and Gulf coasts are in danger of being slammed by hurricanes from June through November because the waters in the North Atlantic Ocean are typically at their warmest while the Sahara is at its hottest during the same time period. A hurricane is a complex weather system that can be simply explained as a funnel of warm, wet air. It is a non-frontal system whose air has a distinct circular flow. One starts formingà for the United States when hot air over the Sahara is released into the North Atlantic. The Sahara The Sahara, whose land mass is almost that of the continental United States, is the largest ââ¬Å"hotâ⬠desert in the world. It is also the second largest desert overall and covers 10 percent of the African continent. (Antarctica is the largest desert in the world and is classified as a ââ¬Å"coldâ⬠desert.) In the Sahara, the day-night-day temperatures can swing 30 degrees in a few hours. Great swirling winds over the Sahara carry sandà over the Mediterranean, bringing storms into England, and drop sand on the beaches of eastern Florida.à The Sahara-Hurricane Connection The temperatures of the land mass of western North Africa growsà hot, and the air over this area rises to create the African easterly jet. A column of hot air swirls upward three miles and spreads as it races to the continentsà west coast, where it dips toward the ocean. The air picks up moisture from the warm waterà and continues its race westward. The flow of the ocean and the spin of Earth combined with the dry winds of the desert and the warm, moist air off the Atlantic horse latitudes make this desert-born weather grow. As aà weather system travels across the Atlantic, it spins and flies over the water and can grow in intensity as it picks up moisture, especially when it arrives in the area of Central America and the warm Eastern Pacific waters. Tropical Storms vs. Hurricanes When wind speeds in the weather system are less than 39 miles per hour, it is classified as a tropical depression. At 39 to 73 miles per hour, it is a tropical storm, if its winds are rotating. This is the point where the World Meteorological Association gives the storm a name, on a predetermined schedule that refreshes names every six years, alternating male and female names in alphabetical order. Next up the storm intensity scale after tropical storms are hurricanes.à The lowest category of hurricanes happens at 74 miles per hour, category 1. Mechanical Properties of FRP Composites Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites are used in a wide variety of applications. Their mechanical properties provide unique benefits to the product they are molded into. FRP composite materials possess superior mechanical properties including: Impact resistanceStrengthStiffnessFlexibilityAbility to carry loads When designing products out of FRP materials, engineers use sophisticated composite material software which calculates the known properties of given the composite. Typical tests used to measure the mechanical properties of FRP composites include: Shear stiffnessTensileFlexible ModulusImpact Components of FRP Composite Materials The two major components of an FRP composite material is resin and reinforcement. A cured thermosetting resin without any reinforcement is glass-like in nature and appearance, but often very brittle. By adding a reinforcing fiber such as carbon fiber, glass, or aramid, the properties are vastly improved. Additionally, with reinforcing fiber, a composite can have anisotropic properties. Meaning, the composite can be engineered to have different properties in different directions depending on the orientation of the fiber reinforcement. Aluminum, steel and other metals have isotropic properties, meaning, equal strength in all directions. A composite material, with anisotropic properties, can have additional reinforcement in the direction of stresses, and this can create more efficient structures at lighter weights. For example, a pultruded rod having all fiberglass reinforcement in the same parallel direction could have tensile strength upwards of 150,000 PSI. Whereas a rod with the same area of random chopped fiber would only have tensile strength around 15,000 PSI. Another difference between FRP composites and metals is the reaction to impact. When metals receive impact, they can yield or dent. While FRP composites have no yield point and will not dent.

ADP method of appraisal was observed to be one of the best tools available to provide employees with set goals and career plans similar to MBO process. The added benefit that ADP provided was that it was undeniably superior to MBO in guiding people towards growth prospects. The ADP plan followed six steps appraisal process which was in line with the 3600 appraisal method. This plan worked as immense aid for a manager as they were provided with the feedback about a subordinate who was reviewed by his peers and also by himself. It helped to reduce the burden of evaluation of an employee by a manager and also it provided a varied perspective towards an employee which in the long run helped in building leaders for the future which was greatly required in the Eastern Hemisphere organization. Thus, ADP had undoubted potential to develop people which was a major weakness in the organization. 2) What Concerns Do Asian Managers Have About ADP? How Substantive Are These Concerns? In the US, th ere was certain skepticism with ADP. The concerns were regarding its acceptability among the employees other than the senior level. It was also thought that the 3600 feedback process will give rise to biasness as popularity of an employee with the managers of would play a major role in getting a good review. The enormities of the process of collecting as well as processing of the feedback were also a major concern. The process was also thought to be devoid of providing any reward for a job done well by an employee.
